The human body has many important parts, including the spinal cord. The spinal cord has nerve cells running to the brain. It forms the central nervous system by coming together with the brain. By forming this system, the spinal cord allows movement of various organs on the body. It also allows for the processing of information gathered through various receptors on the body by the brain.

For spine to perform well, it should be in perfect condition without injuries of any kind. The injury of the spine usually results into many different medical conditions. Herniated disc refers to a spinal cord defect that comes as a result of various causes including automobile accident.

A spinal disc is a structure that holds the spine together and acts as a shock absorber in the case of an accident. In the case of herniation in discs, the stress put on the spinal cord during vehicle collision forces the disc to move out of place. Hence, the absence of it means no shock absorbing, leading to spinal injury that is referred to hernia of the discs.

An individual suffering from this condition has recurrent back, neck or leg pain. This comes as a result of difference in the normal organization of the spinal cord which is affected or weakened during the accident. This prevents it from performing its duties effectively. When the disc is dislocated from position, it leads to creation of protrusion in the outer ring of the spine thus causing discomfort and pain.

This hernia mostly occurs in the lower back area. It is also caused by the natural aging of the spine, this indicates that chances of getting hernia in discs are high in old people than young people. This happens because young people discs have high water, as they gel old the discs begin to dry out and weaken hence they become prone to wear and tear.

Other than aging, other factors include the type of gender also affect the occurrence of the problem. Men can easily be affected compared to women. The use of back muscles when lifting heavy objects makes one to likely suffer from the disease . This is because a lot of pressure is placed on the lower back. People should therefore avoid long hours of sitting and driving. Time for walking should be set aside daily.

One has to go for physical body checkups frequently. This will help them to identify whether they are affected. Some of the signs are frequent leg or foot pains, back pains, weakness in legs. These are clear indications that one may be affected by this problem. Having these symptoms, one has to seek medical attention fast.

Prevention and treatment of the condition can be done in early stages. Non-surgical treatments such as bed rest can help. Prescription by a doctor is also another way of preventing the problem. One might be given anti-inflammatory medications to relieve pain. Physical therapy, involving specific exercises to help in strengthening of the lower back can also help. Proper eating and engaging in regular exercises act as preventive measures.
