How To Prevent Atherosclerosis And Live Longer

By Frank Walker

Blood vessels are often faced with diseases and one of them is known as atherosclerosis. It simply means the blocking of the arteries by fat such that blood passes through with higher pressure. This causes a deficiency of blood, oxygen, and nutrients in important organs of the body. It can lead to symptoms such as ischaemic attack, difficulty in healing wounds, heart attack and erectile dysfunction.

Because this disease is deadly, one has to seek appropriate measures to prevent it. Ways to prevent atherosclerosis are vast and can depend on your age. However, there are general precautions to take by everyone who does not want this challenge. Obeying them strictly and doing all that you are required to do before it develops fully is crucial for your survival.

One of the things that must be stopped is smoking. Smokers have a high level of LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) and low levels of HDL (High-Density Lipoproteins), which helps to transport cholesterol and synthesize it for good use. With low amounts of it, cholesterol accumulates in the vessels and this can cause blockage or rupture of plaques that can lead to clot formation.

Performing exercises regularly can also help to reduce atherosclerosis. No matter how little you do it, it will help a great deal. If you can do yoga or play football for ninety minutes on the pitch, that is fine, but if you are not so strong, joining a walking group in your neighborhood is fine. Just be conscious of not living a sedentary lifestyle. Walk when you can instead of driving everywhere.

There are certain conditions you should also try to avoid because they make having atherosclerosis more possible. They include diabetes, hypothyroidism, high blood pressure, and diabetes. These diseases are also linked to each other. For example, obese people are likely to have high blood pressure and the accumulation of cholesterol in the body can cause obesity.

You also have to watch your feeding habit. Foods that contain high cholesterol are bad for the health. They should be taken in absolute moderation from the age of twenty to reduce the risk of having it in old age. Butter and cheese should be replaced with vegetables and salad and instead of eating late in the night, fruits should rather be consumed. If you don't usually have an appetite for vegetables, you can draw inspiration from other members of the family or your spouse if you are married.

High blood pressure can be reduced drastically when one takes adequate rest. If you sleep 6-8 hours every day and take the other precautions, count yourself lucky because this sickness is not for you. This is because sleep improves your metabolism and reduces cholesterol plaques.

In old age, usually from 50 years and above, the best possible form of prevention would be taking anti-cholesterol drugs. This drug would be as effective as performing exercises. Unfortunately, it has been discovered that not many old people remember to take this medicine after a few weeks they started it. Since everybody is predisposed to having atherosclerosis in the future, effective measures must be taken to avoid it.
