A team of scientists, doctors, bio-engineers and biologists are now working together at the Mayo Clinic to study regenerative medicine. One of the goals of the team, treating different diseases using new and novel therapies in stem cell treatment centers. In fact, transplant surgery and medicine have been pioneered and studied by doctors over the last five years to determine new and interesting innovations in this area.

Regenerative medicine also known as stem cell therapy has proven to replace, repair, reprogram or renew diseased cells in the body. For, these particular cells have the ability to grow in multiple areas of the body. As a result, cells often spread more rapidly in individuals exhibiting signs of diseased cells.

Currently, there are two types of these cells which can be used is this manner, adult cells which have been genetically modified in a lab and those which can be developed out of embryos. In most cases, embryos are collected following an abortion though if occurring in a sterile facility, embryos can also be retrieved following a miscarriage.

Now that researchers have seen proof that these cells have the ability to reprogram diseased cells in the body, research is moving forward with regards to reprogramming diseased cells in the nerves, heart, blood and other parts of the body. After which, it is hoped that new treatments can be developed which will aid in eliminating or curing other issues effecting these areas.

Others are also studying the cells to determine how conditions occur while developing and testing new medications for trials. The Center for Regenerative Medicine at the Mayo Clinic is at the forefront of this research.

Researchers have already discovered that stem cells can help individuals suffering from a number of neurological conditions such as Parkinson's as well as joint issues which effect different areas of the body. As such, stem cell treatment is now considered a realist goal among doctors, researchers, scientists and others.

While there is still a great deal of research into this area, stem cell therapy has often proved unpredictable during research and development. As such, the ability to use the cells as treatment for these and other diseases depends on a number of factors such as recent successes in therapy, funding and regulatory guidelines. In response, the Mayo Clinic and other researchers are now aiming to expand the research and development phase of stem cell therapy while maintaining the safety of patients.

The clinic can currently provide bone marrow transplants which include a number of stem cells. When it comes to trials, people with lymphoma, leukemia and other cancers must still undergo periods of chemotherapy and radiation following such transplants. If interested in this type of treatment, individuals can contact the Mayo Clinic for more information.

While this is the case, the primary goal of the service is to provide consultation and education related to a number of diseases, illnesses and conditions while answering questions about different therapies. After which, staff members provide guidance as a measure of determining whether these individuals are appropriate for ongoing trials. Whereas, the regenerative medicine staff may also be consulted if an individual or physician has questions about the potential use of stem cell therapies related to issues with the heart, liver, lungs or pancreas.
