Cancer is a type of disease that is usually chronic in nature. The disease also lacks definite medical cure in most cases especially at late stages. Patients diagnosed with this diseases and up spending most of their time taking medications or undergoing radiotherapy treatments in an attempt to control the disease. These people therefore face a specially life challenge that people who are healthy cannot understand. These people therefore find themselves alienated from normal people in different activities. Because they need to have a social life too, there is need of having a cancer social network where they get to interact with people who understand them.

These networks can range from internet social pages or specific cancer groups. They are made up of three categories of people. These include the cancer victims affected by the disease, the survivors people who were initially victims but are now cured and lastly a support group or team made of people who assist the patients in the challenges they have but they have never suffered the illness.

One benefit is the sense of belonging that these special networks offer. The challenges experienced by cancer patients are unique and difficult to understand for the normal people. Cancer patients are faced with the harsh reality of knowing death will soon catch up with them or the need to preserve their fertility which could be at risk for cancers like those involving ovaries. For this reason many tend to be alienated and isolated from their peers. Their own social networks give them the feeling that they are part of group thereby easing the loneliness.

These networks link people who have had different levels of experiences in handling the various challenges that arise following the illness. Survivors of cancer as well as the older patients who have adapted to the cancer lifestyle give their experiences and advice. Their testimonies encourage those who may not have come to terms with the nature of their disease. For the new cancer patients, the experiences prepare them on what challenges to expect.

The networks also act as good helper units among themselves in taking care of patients. The constant medications and treatments needed in coping up with the disease is usually an expensive burden. Through these networks, people could easily get financial support to meet their bills from people who have experienced the illness.

Support team also includes health workers. These people provide the patients with the appropriate information about their diseases. They also offer advice on the medications that they are expected to use and expected side effects. This helps in giving insight to these patients as they battle their diseases.

The survivors of cancer finally become important counselors to the patients. They offer psychotherapy through their motivational experiences with the dreaded disease and how they were able to come out successfully. This part of therapy will help hasten the healing process of the others who are still sick.

The development of Cancer social network today has greater prognosis for these patients. Patients are able to live an optimistic life knowing they are never alone. They also have people to associate with and who can help them when they face any difficulties. The patients are also able to understand the best medications to use for better results.
