Basically, the spinal discs form an important part in the lower back. The reason for this is that these spinal discs normally act as the shock absorbers between the vertebrae, offer support to the upper body, as well as allowing different movements to all directions. Nevertheless, the herniated disc can turn from easing the daily life to making worse the back pain and nerve. The pain and nerve symptoms often goes down to your leg.

Generally, the signs and symptoms of disc herniation do not start because of any clear reason. However, these symptoms may as well occur upon lifting heavy weights or because of twisting the lower back. This can lead to slipped disks because such motions increase stress to the disks. Normally, herniation of the lumbar disks is a major medical condition.

On the other hand, slipped discs can happen in any area of your spine from neck to lower back. However, lower back is one of the common areas where slipped discs is experienced. Because spinal column is usually made of blood vessels and networks of nerves, there is extra pressure placed on the nerves and muscles by the slipped disc.

One of the symptom of herniated disk is pain that goes to the leg or arm but this pain can vary in different people. Nevertheless, it is usually important to see a physician if such pain results in numbness and tingling that affect the muscle control ability.

Herniation of disc occurs when the outer ring becomes weak or torn which allows the inner part to slide out. This may occur due to age, although some motions may result in disk herniation. By lifting very heavy and large objects may result in great strain on the lower back that may cause slipped disk. Therefore, people who perform physically demanding jobs involving lifting are more likely to suffer from disk herniation.

Another factor that increases the risk of slipped discs is overweight since the discs must support the extra weight. At the same time, a sedentary lifestyle and weak muscles can also increase the risk of slipped discs. On the other hand, as people become older, they experience slipped discs. This is because the discs start losing their protective water. Because of this, it become easier to slip out of place.

Usually, there are signs and symptoms of the slipped discs. One symptom is that a person experiences arm or leg pain. When the slipped disc has occurred in your lower back, intense pain is experienced in the calf, buttocks, and thigh, as well as some part of the foot. If the slipped disk is in the neck, there is intense pain in the arm and shoulders. This pain can also go to your arm or leg when you sneeze, move your spine in a certain position or cough.

In the diagnosis of slipped disks, a physician performs physical exams so as to determine the origin of the pain and discomfort. This diagnosis involves checking the nerve function, strength of the muscle, and whether touching or moving the affected area causes pain. Other tests like the X-rays, MRI, CT scans, and the discograms can be done.
