Diabetes is a common disease all over the world. Diabetes is classed as metabolism disorder in which the human body does not either produces or properly uses insulin hormone. This hormone actually converts sugar, starches and other food into energy. Diabetes is characterized by constant high levels of blood glucose or sugar. This blood glucose level has to be maintained by the human body within a narrow range. This function can only be performed by insulin and glucagon.

Of course people who are aware of having a family history of diabetes will stick to a diabetes diet plan and follow it very strictly. Also when a doctor diagnoses that a person has diabetes, he or she will immediately recommend a diabetes diet. To follow a diabetes diet, you don't have to go out of your way in buying special foods etc. there are just certain types of food that you must avoid. Sugar of course the first item that's struck off and you are not supposed to consume it in any form while following a diabetes diet. If you consume alcohol, you will have to stop its consumption.

A good alternative to red meat is fish and poultry. Fish like salmon, mackerel are found to be rich in fatty acids which are good for diabetic patients. There are some low carbohydrate foods such as whole grains, beans and peas. Some of the other fatty acid foods such avocados, nuts, walnuts, olives and peanut oils are also good for diabetic patients. Diabetic patients must strictly avoid taking foods which are rich in cream, sugar, butter, cheese and other foods in which the fat content is high.

Diabetic patients should always include foods in their diet which are low in saturated fats and cholesterol such as fruits, vegetables and skinless poultry. Plus you must take your meals on time and make sure that you only consume those foods and drink items which are allowed by your doctor. There should be 10-20% calories added in your diabetic diet which must come from the foods having proteins such as lean meat, fish and low pure milk products. Always add the carbohydrates in your food from foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and beans. You should add fresh juices in your diet. You can also go for special diabetic products of any type you want which is sometimes expensive but are safe.
