In a time when health care policies are sweeping the nation with changes it has come into evidence by study after study that Health care prevention is the key source to avoiding health care neglect.

The number one cause of death in the United States is heart attack with stroke as the number three cause of death across the nation. At least one in five adults living has had heart disease, stroke, or another form of cardiovascular disease, and those numbers will continue to increase as risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, lack of exercise, smoking, obesity, and diabetes continue to increase. The staff at the San Mateo County innovative program, in California claims that if heart attacks and strokes were eliminated, life expectancy would increase by almost seven years.

Patients who are seen by nurses and dietitians who specialize in heart disease prevention and treatment to reduce their cardiovascular disease risk factors will help to curb heart attacks and strokes in the U.S. "With preventive care we could eliminate many of the causes that create conditions for heart attack and stroke," says Kurt Holster of Florida.

Better patient management, one on one time, will save lives, but who has the time for such an open dialog and diagnosis? Hopefully your doctor will take the time- "Many doctors these days seem to be pushing the patients through one after another without so much as hello, they need to slow down and get to know me, I'm getting old but I'm not going away." says Connie Jean of Texas.

You must be responsible for your health care, if you are not satisfied with the care you are receiving talk with your doctor and express your concerns; if you are not getting the answers you need it might be time to switch doctors. Many medical professionals really do want to help you come to happy conclusion about your health care long-term plan and will take the time to map out the best road to wellness, however if you don't answer honestly to medical questions or ask any questions yourself, your office visit might just be that routine visit of in and out service.

Adults who have continuous health care coverage typically create a relationship with their doctor but those patients who experience gaps in their coverage are less likely to have a regular doctor to do preventive care visits, and often dismiss health conditions that would cause a medical professional concern.

Preventive care helps everyone not just those who may have heart disease. If you invest in your health care now by visiting your doctor on a regular basis you will save have saved yourself thousand of dollars if something is caught early on, for instance cancer; since major medical expenses for cancer could easily exceed your maximum insurance coverage, wouldn't it be much easier to catch it in the earlier stages. With preventive care you have relatively inexpensive regular check-ups but should you not visit the doctor until something is wrong you could then not only be paying for office visits but looking at long-term health care or home visits by a nurse where expenses can reach high enough to destroy a person's life savings.

If you should need to visit a doctor for more than just a "regular" check-up, make sure if any tests, or x-rays are done that your are given the choice for a copy of your test results, and or x-rays for your records, these are especially nice to have if you need to change doctors for any reason. The key is to be prepared and take care of yourself, so you can live a healthy, productive life.
